The most clever guitar players can even take up the jazz improvisation challenge that sets big demands to your hearing and recognizing of harmonies within a chord or progression. Somebody says that in Jazz all tones are like “legal”, I would say that’s truth with modifications, but there’s always a red thread in Free – Jazz even, where the improvisation sequence now and then visits the harmonies played by the other instruments.
When rehearsing timing is just as important as the harmonies, and can make the perception of 2 similar sequences of tones sound completely differently. Rehearse with a metronome, and play together with other people regularly to train timing. It’s also important to vary both tones and speed, and tones strenght. The optimal solo has the right dynamical combination of tones, tone sequence speed, and even small breaks in solo, where the other instruments do suitable fills in, like a short bass guitar sequence.
And important thing is to listen also music even when not rehearsing, just for relaxing or even when doing other stuff, especially in learning jazz. The music builds a pattern in your sub consciousness, so you will remember some of this when you try to improvise on your own. Learn the improvising clichés before going trying to create your own thing or style.

This will provide a good foundation and when they are old enough to learn the guitar – or any other instrument for that matter – they will progress much faster and achieve satisfying results sooner.
I also recommend that young children (usually under twelve) who want to learn the electric guitar start on a nylon string guitar. Their small delicate fingers often are not ready for the harsh steel strings of an E-guitar or acoustic guitar. Any classical technique they learn on the nylon string guitar will be very useful later on if they want to change to a different style of playing. I found that some children who initially want to learn the electric guitar fall in love with the classical style. They simply had never been introduced to that style of music before.

Wouldn’t it be Great to be Able to Buy a Guitar That Felt Gig Ready Right Out of the Box?
Guitar purchase “off the rack” can be a mine field, consider “custom” versus “pre-fab” electric guitars.
I love guitars, and there’s nothing like a new electric guitar with a proper set up! I like the tone, the way it feels in my hands, and the way that I can make a guitar sound “right” for any kind of music that I play. Whether it’s jazz, blues, country, hard rock, R&B leads, guitar chords, or just working on guitar tabs, all it takes is a flip of a switch, some prep, a couple twists of the knobs, neck alignment and I’m right where I need to be. I’ve bought a lot of guitars over the years, and discovered that taking that beautiful new Strat or Tele guitar out of the box was always just the first step in finding the guitar that fit in my hands the way that I imagined that it would when it first caught my eye. After a close inspection I found that my new guitar wouldn’t be quite gig ready until I did all of the little subtle tweaks, repairs and modifications that would make it play just the way I wanted it to when I got it out onto the gig. I’d dress the frets, get the intonation just right, tweak the pick-ups, customize the configuration a bit, and before you know it, I’d be playing a guitar that felt like it was made to be in my hands. Playing music is always fun, but when I’m on the gig with a guitar that feels just right … it’s just pure guitar joy.
After a while I thought; “Wouldn’t it be great to be able to buy a guitar that felt gig ready right out of the box?” As wonderful as that idea may seem, in reality it’s almost impossible to pick up a guitar in a music store “off the rack” and have it play right. It just doesn’t happen. There are many things that need to be done to “prep” the guitar before it’s ready to play. At Haywire Custom Guitars (http://www.HaywireCustomGuitars.com) we recommend and perform all of the following in prep for a guitar purchase before it leaves the bench at the workshop. For our purposes here I will focus only on electric instruments for now. First, let me pose a question to the beginning through the advanced guitarist. What Is Guitar Intonation and why is it important? Do you know?
Intonation is the accuracy in which an electric guitar or bass can produce a fretted note and the most important issue with any instrument. Setting the intonation on a guitar is the act of adjusting the length of the strings (by moving the bridge saddles) to compensate for the thickness of the string and the stretching of a string due to pushing it down to the fret board to produce a note. To adjust the intonation of your guitar or bass guitar, you move the bridge saddles toward or away from the fret board until the 12th fret note and its harmonic are equal in pitch to the same open-string note, which are exactly one octave apart. Accurate intonation is critical to pitch quality. Pitch quality is essential to “in tune” playing. Poor pitch quality=”out of tune” notes which in turn = poor musical presentation. Wouldn’t you or the salesman want to present your musical talents in the best way possible? Of course, you do.
Now, it is not necessary for a guitar player to know this at all. It is essential however that the guitar possess this quality and maintain as close to perfect intonation as possible. Buying on looks alone can be very disappointing. If however, you like an instrument for the looks but realize that you will need to have it worked on to get it playable then that is a savvy notion. It’s best to speak to a luthier or guitar builder previous to any purchase. It’s akin to asking a mechanic which car he would recommend-before you walk into the show room. In this way you can benefit from his first hand knowledge and experience and not have to go it alone. After all he sees the ones that breakdown more often than you or the salesman do.
Below, I have outlined the essential adjustments to be performed prior to purchasing and playing a guitar under optimal circumstances.
1. 4-axis Alignment of the guitar neck. The guitar neck is checked and adjusted to insure that it is true and straight to insure proper alignment on all axis. This step insures proper action and allows for more accurate and easier guitar tuning, playing and set-up in the following steps.
2. Inspect and Lube the guitar tuning gears
Each tuning gear is adjusted so that there is no play in the mechanism. They are then lubricated to insure smooth and even movement to make your guitar tune accurately.
3. Potting the guitar pickups. Dip the pickups in hot wax to reduce squeal and unwanted guitar feedback.
4. Prep the guitar body. Upon installing the guitar electronic components, great care is taken to insure that all wires are properly routed, spaced, and grounded to insure years of trouble free service with your guitar.
5. Level and polish the frets. This insures that all of the guitar frets are level, eliminating any possibility of fret buzz due to unevenness.
6. Radius the guitar strings. Most guitar necks have a contour over the top of the neck called the “radius”. Adjust the strings to make sure the height of each string follows the contour of the guitar neck.
7. Adjusting the overall guitar string height and the action. Once the string contour and radius of the guitar strings is set, it’s time to adjust the overall height or “action” or distance of the strings from the top of the frets to the bottom of the guitar strings.
8. Set the guitar intonation. This step should be done twice. The intonation is normally set two times with a 24 hour period in between to allow the new guitar adjustments to properly re-seat.
If these steps are performed before playing your new guitar then, you won’t be disappointed. Your focus can then be on the music and not the problems of the instrument. If it is “set up” properly a player will not have to “get used to” it. Everything on it will feel natural and fall right into place and the music can flow.
In summary, Guitar purchase “off the rack” can be a real disappointment. A thoughtful purchase should include consideration in buying a “custom” or “Gig-Ready” electric guitar versus a “pre-fab” instrument built on a production line. Whether it’s jazz, blues, country, hard rock, R&B leads, guitar chords, or just working on guitar tabs, all it takes is a flip of a switch, some prep, a couple twists of the knobs, neck alignment and I’m right where I need to be. I’ve bought a lot of guitars over the years, and discovered that taking that beautiful new Strat or Tele guitar out of the box was always just the first step in finding the guitar that fit in my hands the way that I imagined that it would when it first caught my eye. After a close inspection I found that my new guitar wouldn’t be quite gig ready until I did all of the little subtle tweaks, repairs and modifications that would make it play just the way I wanted it to when I got it out onto the gig. I’d dress the frets, get the intonation just right, tweak the pick-ups, customize the configuration a bit, and before you know it, I’d be playing a guitar that felt like it was made to be in my hands. Playing music is always fun, but when I’m on the gig with a guitar that feels just right … it’s just pure guitar joy.
After a while I thought; “Wouldn’t it be great to be able to buy a guitar that felt gig ready right out of the box?” As wonderful as that idea may seem, in reality it’s almost impossible to pick up a guitar in a music store “off the rack” and have it play right. It just doesn’t happen. There are many things that need to be done to “prep” the guitar before it’s ready to play. At Haywire Custom Guitars (http://www.HaywireCustomGuitars.com) we recommend and perform all of the following in prep for a guitar purchase before it leaves the bench at the workshop. For our purposes here I will focus only on electric instruments for now. First, let me pose a question to the beginning through the advanced guitarist. What Is Guitar Intonation and why is it important? Do you know?
Intonation is the accuracy in which an electric guitar or bass can produce a fretted note and the most important issue with any instrument. Setting the intonation on a guitar is the act of adjusting the length of the strings (by moving the bridge saddles) to compensate for the thickness of the string and the stretching of a string due to pushing it down to the fret board to produce a note. To adjust the intonation of your guitar or bass guitar, you move the bridge saddles toward or away from the fret board until the 12th fret note and its harmonic are equal in pitch to the same open-string note, which are exactly one octave apart. Accurate intonation is critical to pitch quality. Pitch quality is essential to “in tune” playing. Poor pitch quality=”out of tune” notes which in turn = poor musical presentation. Wouldn’t you or the salesman want to present your musical talents in the best way possible? Of course, you do.
Now, it is not necessary for a guitar player to know this at all. It is essential however that the guitar possess this quality and maintain as close to perfect intonation as possible. Buying on looks alone can be very disappointing. If however, you like an instrument for the looks but realize that you will need to have it worked on to get it playable then that is a savvy notion. It’s best to speak to a luthier or guitar builder previous to any purchase. It’s akin to asking a mechanic which car he would recommend-before you walk into the show room. In this way you can benefit from his first hand knowledge and experience and not have to go it alone. After all he sees the ones that breakdown more often than you or the salesman do.
Below, I have outlined the essential adjustments to be performed prior to purchasing and playing a guitar under optimal circumstances.
1. 4-axis Alignment of the guitar neck. The guitar neck is checked and adjusted to insure that it is true and straight to insure proper alignment on all axis. This step insures proper action and allows for more accurate and easier guitar tuning, playing and set-up in the following steps.
2. Inspect and Lube the guitar tuning gears
Each tuning gear is adjusted so that there is no play in the mechanism. They are then lubricated to insure smooth and even movement to make your guitar tune accurately.
3. Potting the guitar pickups. Dip the pickups in hot wax to reduce squeal and unwanted guitar feedback.
4. Prep the guitar body. Upon installing the guitar electronic components, great care is taken to insure that all wires are properly routed, spaced, and grounded to insure years of trouble free service with your guitar.
5. Level and polish the frets. This insures that all of the guitar frets are level, eliminating any possibility of fret buzz due to unevenness.
6. Radius the guitar strings. Most guitar necks have a contour over the top of the neck called the “radius”. Adjust the strings to make sure the height of each string follows the contour of the guitar neck.
7. Adjusting the overall guitar string height and the action. Once the string contour and radius of the guitar strings is set, it’s time to adjust the overall height or “action” or distance of the strings from the top of the frets to the bottom of the guitar strings.
8. Set the guitar intonation. This step should be done twice. The intonation is normally set two times with a 24 hour period in between to allow the new guitar adjustments to properly re-seat.
If these steps are performed before playing your new guitar then, you won’t be disappointed. Your focus can then be on the music and not the problems of the instrument. If it is “set up” properly a player will not have to “get used to” it. Everything on it will feel natural and fall right into place and the music can flow.
In summary, Guitar purchase “off the rack” can be a real disappointment. A thoughtful purchase should include consideration in buying a “custom” or “Gig-Ready” electric guitar versus a “pre-fab” instrument built on a production line. The best piece of advice is to buy yourself a cheap electric guitar. When you’re first learning it’s not essential that you own a hugely expensive model of electric guitar. It’s usually harder just to make it produce the sound you want it to produce, so you don’t need the best guitar.
Secondly, it’s important to start learning about the different types of electric guitar available. As you progress through the process of learning to play the guitar you will eventually need to trade up to a more expensive guitar, and if you know what sound it is you want to produce and which guitar is more likely to do that you’ll probably be happier with your choice. Types of guitars. There are many different types of guitars that have been made popular in the past. Guitars can be electric or acoustic, depending on the guitarist’s preferred genre and style. Guitars are also perfect for rock bands, varieties of which include Bass Guitars and rhythm guitars. A rhythm guitarist usually provides powerful progression of beats, which is usually done with playing guitar chords instead of plucking the strings. A bass guitarist, on the other hand, usually makes use of low tones with its low pitched strings to produce the beat of the song. A bass guitar should perfectly blend with the drums; otherwise everyone will go out of tune.
Guitar chords. Transcriptions of songs for guitar players include chords that are the basic component of a song. There are so-called major (for a more determined sound) and minor chords (for a mellow sound), as well as seventh chords (mainly used for various transitions). They all produce distinctive sounds that distinguish notes from other forms of melodies present in a song. Guitar chords are available in the form of a music chart, which displays all of the existing finger positions that are simply the source of the distinct sound that these chords make. To start studying guitar chords, you have to be familiar with the finger assignments and placements when making an A minor chord, for example. You have to position your fingers on the guitar frets in the exact way the chart indicates – otherwise you will find your fingers awkwardly placed in the frets and the produced sound will be far from the desired one.
Reading tabs. This is one of the basic skills that any guitar player should gain. Tablatures are notes of a musical transcription that can be used to accompany a learning guitarist to “ride” with the tune and tempo of the actual song. A tablature is usually composed of strings and numbers, symbolizing frets and fingers that are required to play a certain part of the song. However, you can’t make any use of these tabs if you are not familiar enough with the timings and rhythms of the actual song you want to play. It is very helpful, therefore, to master the song first, so that you can finally “play it by ear”, just like any other guitarist. Tabs can be of great help to you especially if you want to impress friends with playing the most important part of the song – the lead.
Guitar tuning. This is basically the most important thing you need to do before your playing session – yes, I really recommend you that you tune your guitar every single time you want to play it. A guitar that sounds the same every time you play it really helps you to advance faster, it makes it easier for you to sing along and it helps you to stay in tune. Beginner Guitar Players Jam Session
The Rock Shop in Florida is a our local music shop. The owner Tom is kind enough to host a small beginners jam on Tuesday nights at one of his warehouses. He has a lot of patience. He should have been a Doctor! It is very personal and comfortable and has a wall of various amps, a full drum setup and space for the bass, rhythm and lead guitar players on a stage.
Tom is a terrific musician, he plays a wicked guitar and ain’t to bad at the bass guitar either. John plays the drums, his experience is important as a way of keeping time. John really shows the value of a metronome. The timing and rhythm necessary to play with other folks that is critical. Jack is our regular bass player and he has about a year into it, he has really good chops for a relatively new player. Man, a decent bass player is like a metronome too, this is the beat we listen for.
Note: Use a metronome and a guitar tuner.
The first jam most new players are nervous. Realistically speaking that is an understandable emotion. However, that feeling passes quickly as you blend in and learn to play with other folks. The whole vibe is to get you playing and make it a fun experience. No one leaves bummed out, we make sure to play simple three chord songs that most people are familiar with. Lots of them are in the twelve bar blues structure.
Learning about Guitar Tab is a wonderful way to get the music, scales and chords to a song on paper. If everyone has the same tab and understands it, then it’s easy for everyone to get into a groove. The mandatory common guitar chords stage one will give you a good start. Choosing the right songs is another benefit for beginners.

Like football, every player has a job or position to play. If the guy next to you blows his assignment, don’t worry about it, take care of your assignment only. Keep the beat, miss a note, keep the beat. Always keep the beat. Focus on the bass guitar or drummer.
The basic idea is that if you go into a zone, where all you focus on is the beat and what you are doing, than perhaps you won’t get stage freight. Going into a zone should prevent you from worrying about the audience. You won’t even know people may be listening.
Many of the places beginners jam at already have amps, drums and a stage like Tom’s warehouse. If you get in a band and do gigs, you got to bring your own equipment.
With that being said, at a minimum, bring a set of strings, a 20 foot guitar chord, a tuner and a guitar stand. Bring some potato chips and cokes for the host!

Guitar (violao) is considered as an instrument in many forms of music like blues, country, flamenco, rock and even pop. Acoustically playing, the guitar involves production of the tone by vibration of the string and modulation by the hollow body. Electronic manipulation can also be done on the tone using an amplifier.
Combinations of various woods, with either nylon or steel strings are used for the construction of guitars. The person who makes and repairs string instruments like guitar is called a luthier.
History and development of string instruments similar to guitar (violao) can be traced back to at least 5,000 years. In those days, when synthetic material was not available for making guitars, a guitar was defined as `a long, fretted neck, flat wooden soundboard, ribs, and a flat back instrument, most often with incurved sides`.
There are two major types of guitars:
